HAVET, AUGUSTE-ERNEST. - French scholar and philosopher, b. in Paris on 11 April 1813, d. there on 21 Dec. 1889. The theories contained in some of his works, e.g., La modernité des prophètes (Paris 1850), aroused fierce opposition. His reputation rests upon a truly valuable edition of Pascal’s Pensées (published in full and accompanied by an excellent commentary, ibid. 1852), and upon the work Le christianisme et ses origines (ibid. 1872-84; placed on the Index, decree of 3 Feb. 1879), in which he maintains that the genesis of Christianity is to be sought rather in the doctrines of the Greek philosophers than in the Old Testament, especially with regard to the formation of Christian dogmas. He also published Jésus dans l'histoire (ibid. 1863).
