HAVET, AUGUSTE-ERNEST. - French scholar and philosopher, b. in Paris on 11 April 1813, d. there on 21 December 1889. The theories contained in some of his works, e.g., La modernité des prophètes (Paris 1850), aroused fierce opposition. His fame rests on a truly precious edition of Pascal's Pensées (published in full and accompanied by an excellent commentary, ibid. 1852), and on the work Le christianisme et ses origines (ibid. 1872-84; placed on the Index, decr. 3 Feb. 1879), in which it is maintained that the genesis of Christianity is to be sought rather in the doctrines of the Greek philosophers than in the Old Testament, principally as regards the formation of Christian dogmas. He also published Jésus dans l'histoire (ibid. 1863).
