HAWARDEN, EDWARD. - English theologian and controversialist, b. at Croxteth (Lancashire) on 9 April 1662, d. in London on 23 April 1735. He was a pupil and, as a priest (1686), a professor at the English College of Douai. Accused in Rome of Jansenism, though recognized as innocent, he resigned and in 1707 returned to England, where by word and by his writings he worked for the conversion of his countrymen.

The controversy that he victoriously sustained against S. Clarke, in the presence of Queen Caroline, on the Most Holy Trinity, remained famous. Of his works, mention should be made of: The true Church of Christ, shewed by Concurrent testimonies of Scripture and primitive tradition (London 1714); The rule of faith truly stated in a new and easy method (ibid. 1721); Charity and truth (Brussels 1728); An answer to Dr. Clarke and mr. Whiston concerning the Divinity of the Son and the Holy Spirit (London 1729); Opera omnia (Dublin 1808).
