HAY, JOHN. - Scottish Jesuit theologian, b. at Dalgety (Fifeshire) in 1546, d. at Pont-à-Mousson on 21 May 1607. He soon became well known for his controversies on the doctrine of transubstantiation, which he defended against the Protestants at Strasbourg in 1576. He taught theology at the University of Tournon (1581) and was rector of the College of Pont-à-Mousson.
He wrote: *Certain demands concerning the Christian Religion and Discipline* (Paris 1580), a work which aroused the resentment of the Calvinists; *Disputationum libri duo in quibus calumniae et captiones Ministri Anonymi Nemanus, discutiuntur* (Lyons 1584); *L'Antimoine aux res-posées que Th. de Béze fait à trente sept demandes* (Tournon 1588); *De rebus Japonici, Indici et Peruviani esplo-tale recentiores* (Antwerp 1605); he also edited the *Bibliotheca Sancta* of Sixtus of Siena (Lyons 1591-92).
