HAY, JOHN. - Scottish Jesuit theologian, b. at Dalgety (Fifeshire) in 1546, d. at Pont-à-Mousson on 21 May 1607. He soon became known for his polemics on the doctrine of transubstantiation upheld against the Protestants at Strasbourg in 1576. He taught theology at the University of Tournon (1581) and was rector of the College of Pont-à-Mousson.
He wrote: Certain demandes concerning the Christian Religion and Discipline (Paris 1580), a work that aroused the resentment of the Calvinists; Disputationum libri duo in quibus calumniae et captiones Ministri Anonymi Nemanensis... discutiuntur (Lyons 1584); L'Antimoine aux responses que Th. de Bèze fait à trente sept demandes (Tournon 1588); De rebus Japonicis, Indicii et Peruvianis epistolae recentiores (Antwerp 1605); he also edited the edition of the Bibliotheca Sancta of Sixtus of Siena (Lyons 1591-92).
