Latin: Antonius Hickey, Antonius Higuaeus
HICKEY (Higuaeus), Antony. - Irish theologian, b. in County Clare at Thomond in 1586, d. in Rome on 26 June 1641. A Franciscan (1607) at the Irish College of St. Anthony in Louvain, he taught theology and philosophy, then moved to Cologne to the College of St. Francis. In 1619 he was sent to Rome as a collaborator of his compatriot Wadding (v.).
He wrote: Nitela franciscanae religionis et absterio sordium quibus eam conspurcare frustra tentavit Abrahamus Bravinus (Lyons 1627), published under the pseudonym of Dermitius Thadeus; the incomplete Commentarii in II. IV Sententiarum (ibid. 1639), an erudite defense of Scotist doctrine. He also wrote on the Immaculate Conception, on the stigmata of St. Catherine of Siena, and an unpublished ascetical work. Death prevented him from setting his hand to that extensive general critical history of Ireland, the plan of which he had worked out with the help of certain Irish scholars.
