IACOPO DI PORTA RAVEGNANA. - Bolognese jurist, b. in an uncertain year, already on the chair before 1140, d. in Bologna on 11 Oct. 1178.

He was one of the four doctors, immediate disciples of Irnerius, who, summoned by Barbarossa, took part at Roncaglia in 1158 in the definition of the imperial regalia: the least known of them all, since nothing survives of him except a certain number of glosses (marked I., Ie., Iac., Iaco.), to which perhaps some writings of disputed attribution are to be added, among them a Tractatus criminum; but perhaps the most esteemed by his contemporaries, if the legend could arise (interpolated in the chronicle of Otto Morena) according to which the dying Irnerius, choosing among the four him as his own successor, praised him highly in the famous distich:

Bulgarus os aureum, Martinus copia legum,
mens legum est Ugo, Jacopus id quod ego.
