IACOPO (LAPO) TEDESCO. - Legendary 13th-century architect, whom Vasari in the second edition of the Vite (1568) says came from Germany to build the basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (whose transalpine characteristics he thus intends to explain), and author of many other buildings. He is also said to be the father of Arnolfo di Cambio.

The documents contradict this second assertion, as well as the attribution to him of many works (the bishopric of Arezzo; the piers of the Ponte alla Carraia and the Palazzo del Bargello in Florence; the tomb of Frederick II in Palermo, etc.), several of which differ in date and style. In all likelihood he is an imaginary figure, resulting from a confusion on Vasari's part.
