IACOPO (LAPO) TEDESCO. — Legendary architect of the 13th century, whom Vasari, in the second edition of the *Vite* (1568), claims came from Germany to build the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi (thus seeking to explain its transalpine characteristics), and who is also said to have been the author of many other structures. He is also referred to as the father of Arnolfo di Cambio.
Documents contradict both this latter assertion and the attribution to him of many works (the bishopric of Arezzo; the piers of the Carraia Bridge and the Bargello Palace in Florence; the tomb of Frederick II in Palermo, etc.), which differ in date and style. It is likely that this is a fictional figure, arising from Vasari’s confusion.
