IACOPO da CAMERINO. - Mosaicist friar, assistant to Torriti in the apse mosaic of S. Giovanni in Laterano, completed c. 1292.
In the lower mosaic band, on the right, there is a tiny figure of a kneeling friar bearing the inscription «FR IACOPI DE CAMERINO SOCI MAIORI OPIS RE/COMNDAT SE MIE DI ET MERITIS BEATI IORIS». Given the complete nineteenth-century reconstruction of that mosaic, it is impossible to determine what part this I. da C. had in it; moreover, he must have occupied a subordinate position, since he is depicted holding a hammer, as though working, whereas Torriti has the square and compass. The identifications with the namesake appearing in a list of workmen employed in 1325 on the cathedral of Orvieto, and with the other who in 1341 was among the executors of the mosaics, now lost, for the Palazzo dei Consoli at Gubbio, are hypothetical.
