IACOBO of CAMERINO. – A Franciscan musician, assistant to Torriti in the apse mosaic of St John Lateran, completed c. 1292.
In the lower mosaic band, on the right, there is a tiny figure of a kneeling friar with the inscription «FR IACOB DE CAMERINO SOCI MA/CRI OPIS RE/COMN/DA/SE MIE /DI ET MERITIS BEATI IOHIS». Given the complete nineteenth-century restoration of that mosaic, it is impossible to determine what part I. of C. may have played, especially since he must have been subordinate, as he is shown holding a hammer, almost like a workman, while Torriti holds the square and compass. The identifications with the namesake listed among the workers who in 1325 were employed on the cathedral of Orvieto, and with another who in 1341 was among the executors of the now-lost mosaics for the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio, remain hypothetical.
