IACOPO DA CAMERINO. - Mosaicist friar, assistant to Torriti in the apse mosaic of St. John Lateran, completed ca. 1292.

In the lower mosaic band, on the right, there is a tiny figure of a kneeling friar with the inscription «FR IACOPI DE CAMERINO SOCI MAIORI OPIS RE/COMNDAT SE MIE DI ET MERITIS BEATI IORIS». Given the complete nineteenth-century reworking of that mosaic, it is not possible to infer what part this I. da C. had in it, who moreover must have been in a subordinate role, since he is represented with a hammer in his hand, almost as a workman, while Torriti has the square and the compass. The identifications with the namesake who appears in a list of workmen who were working in 1325 for the cathedral of Orvieto, and with the other who in 1341 was among the executants of the mosaics, now lost, for the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio, are hypothetical.
