IACOPINO da TRADATE. — Lombard sculptor, he took part in the work on the construction of Milan Cathedral from 1401 to 1425, and in 1407 was head of the stonecutters. In 1440 he is known to have been in Mantua, where he probably died.
His only certain work is the statue of Pope Martin V in the Cathedral, which must be regarded as one of the most important works of Lombard sculpture of the first decades of the 1400s, in which the tendencies of the International Gothic style broaden into an extensive pictorialism, not free from Tuscan influences. Recently, considerable progress has been made in defining his artistic personality by attributing to him two gigantic figures from the piers of Milan Cathedral, as well as other exquisite works, such as the Torelli ark in S. Eustorgio and a Madonna and Child in the Novara Museum.
