ODOFREDO DENARI. - Jurist, one of the last glossators, born in Bologna of a noble and wealthy family in the first decade of the 13th century, died on 3 December 1265.
A pupil of Iacopo Baldovini, O. was for about thirty years a professor at the Studium of Bologna. His broad experience in judicial and political matters, which he sharpened through the practice of law and through long stays in France and in many places in Italy, justified the important offices entrusted to him by his Commune and by others.
Erudite, but anything but original, and written in a careless and prolix style, his Lecturae on the Digest and on the Justinian Code nevertheless have two great merits: that of being the only ones, among the lectures of the glossators, that are preserved in their original form or nearly so, and that of being embellished with interesting information, even if not always worthy of belief, about the customs of the time and the historical vicissitudes of the Bolognese school. Many minor works by O. also survive, especially monographs, an exact catalogue of which is difficult to establish, given the uncertainty of various attributions.
