ODOFREDO DENARI. - Jurist, one of the last glossators, born in Bologna into a noble and wealthy family in the first decade of the thirteenth century; died 3 Dec. 1265.
A pupil of Iacopo Baldovini, O. was a professor at the Studium of Bologna for about thirty years. His extensive experience in judicial and political affairs, which he acquired through the practice of law and through long sojourns in France and in many parts of Italy, justified the important offices entrusted to him by his Commune and by others.
Learned, but far from original, and written in a careless and prolix style, his Lecturae on the Digest and the Justinian Code nevertheless possess two great merits: they are the only lectures of the glossators to have been preserved in their original, or nearly original, form; and they are embellished with interesting information—though not always trustworthy—concerning the customs of the time and the historical vicissitudes of the Bolognese school. There also remain many minor works by O., above all monographs, of which it is difficult to establish a precise catalogue, owing to the uncertainty of various attributions.
