IBRIŠIMOVIĆ, LUCA. – Franciscan, Croatian national hero, born in Požega in 1620, died there in 1698. Defender of the Christian people of Slavonia against the oppression of the Turks, he was imprisoned several times and persecuted to the point of death; he worked tirelessly to restore the religious and civil life of the suffering people. During the Vienna War (1683–99), he led the national uprising for the liberation of Slavonia from Turkish tyranny and, as a valiant commander, defeated the enemy in the battle of Sokolovac.
