IBRIŠIMOVIĆ, LUCA

IBRIŠIMOVIĆ, LUKA. - Franciscan, Croatian national hero, b. at Požega in 1620, d. there in 1698. A defender of the Christian people of Slavonia against the oppression of the Turks, he was imprisoned several times and persecuted to the point of death; he labored tirelessly to restore the religious and civil life of the suffering people. During the war of Vienna (1683-99) he led the national insurrection for the liberation of Slavonia from Turkish tyranny, and in the battle of Sokolovac, as a valiant commander, he defeated the enemy.
