IBRIŠIMOVIĆ, LUCA

LUKA IBRIŠIMOVIĆ. - Franciscan friar, Croatian national hero, born at Požega in 1620, died there in 1698. A defender of the Christian people of Slavonia against Turkish oppression, he was repeatedly imprisoned and sentenced to death; he worked tirelessly to restore the religious and civil life of the suffering people. During the Vienna War (1683-99) he led the national uprising for the liberation of Slavonia from Turkish tyranny, and at the Battle of Sokolovac, as a valiant commander, he defeated the enemy.
