MARIOTTE, EDMÉ. - Physicist, born at Digione ca. 1620, died at Parigi on 12 May 1684; prior at St-Martin-sous-Beaune (Digione).
Having become acquainted, through Fr. M. Mersenne, of the Minims (1588–1648), with the experiments of Galileo, Viviani (1643), Torricelli, Pascal (1648), and
to mitigate somewhat certain dogmatic divergences and counter the biting attacks of the dissenters against the pope and the Roman Church, M. entered the fray, pointing out the right path to union under the motto « veritatem in caritate facientes », and writing voluminous works of fundamental value: Leo the Great and Gregory the Great on the primacy of the see (Zara 1883); The Primacy of the Pope in the Church during the First Eight Centuries (Zagabria 1883; for this work Leone XIII conferred on him the title of doctor honoris causa); Caesarism and Byzantinism in the History of the Eastern Schism (2 vols., ibid. 1891); On the Eucharist with Particular Regard to the Epiclesis (ibid. 1893; 2nd ed., ibid. 1894); The Slavs and the Popes (2 vols., ibid. 1897). Also deserving mention are: Sinj and Its Glory (ibid. 1898); The Metropolises of Dioclea and Antivari (ibid. 1902); numerous articles and dissertations in which he polemicizes against the Russian convert Solovjev and others.
