JELENIĆ, JULIJAN. - Franciscan historian, b. at Riječane in Bosnia on 29 Aug. 1877, d. on 5 Aug. 1931. A priest in 1903, he was appointed professor at Sarajevo in 1909, and in 1919 transferred to the University of Zagreb. He is one of the most prolific among the modern historians of the Church in Croatia.

He left a broad, documented general history of the Church, and he illustrated the vicissitudes of the great Franciscan province of Bosnia, around which the entire religious and cultural life of most of the territory and of the Croatian people gravitated for several centuries. His principal works are: Il Regio Vivoko e il convento di S. Nicola (Sarajevo 1906); La cultura e i Francescani bosniaci (2 vols., ibid. 1912-15); La storia della Chiesa di Cristo (up to 1954), ibid. 1921-28); Le fonti per la storia culturale dei Francescani bosniaci 1437-1878 (ibid. 1918); Documenta res gestas Fratrum Minorum provinciae Bosniae Argentinae spectantia (Mostar 1927), etc. He also wrote articles and dissertations in various scholarly journals.
