IMBREVIATURA - Carta Augustana with its relevant i.: Pietro di Conoz (from Cuneo) donates to Gottorfedo di Châtillon (de Castellione) «totam illam feudataria et totum illud ius» of the fief that he held from Gottorfedo himself (Aosta, 7 March 1252) - Châtillon (Aosta), Archivio Challant, bundle 61, 5.
IMBREVIATURA. - In medieval terminology, it is the draft act drawn up by the rogatory notary on a separate sheet and sometimes also on the verso of the parchment itself intended to contain the document, or, later, in the protocol register, sometimes also called, by extension, i. It was usually written in summary form, with the omission of the fixed parts of the formulary, which the notary completed in the final drafting. In earlier times the i. were normally destroyed after the drafting of the document; but from the age of the Communes they were preserved by the same rogatory notary and constituted the material of the notarial archives (v. NOTARIATO).
A separate case is that of the charta augustana (11th-15th centuries), that is, of the documents issued by the chancery of the city of Aosta, where the dorsal note, which constitutes documentary proof, follows the notarial i. and precedes the writing on the recto, which represents the dispositive document.
