IMBONATI, CARLO GIUSEPPE. - A Cistercian Hebraist of the 17th century, about whom little biographical information survives; born in Milan, he lived for a long time in Rome, and died in 1697. From his confrere G. Bartolocci (v.) he learned Greek and Hebrew, and he assisted him in compiling the extensive Bibliotheca magna rabbinica, continuing its publication after his master's death. In 1693 he thus brought out vol. IV, drawn almost entirely from the papers of the deceased.

As a personal work, he published a Bibliotheca latino-hebraica sive de scriptoribus latinis qui ex diversis rationibus contra Iudaeos vel de re hebraica utcunque scripsere... (Rome 1694), with a long apologetic appendix (Adventus Messiae) on the Messiah and with a study on the chronology of the Bible.
