CARLO GIUSEPPE IMBONATI. — Cistercian Hebraist of the 17th century, of whom scant biographical details are known; born in Milan, he lived for a long time in Rome and died in 1697. He learned Greek and Hebrew from his fellow confrere G. Bartolocci (v.), and assisted him in compiling the extensive Biblioteca magna rabbinica, continuing its publication after his master’s death. In 1693 he published volume IV, almost entirely drawn from the works of the deceased.
As a personal work, I. published a Bibliotheca latino-hebraica sive de scriptoribus latinis qui ex diversis rationibus contra Iudaeos vel de re hebraica utcumque scripsere... (Rome 1694), with a lengthy apologetic appendix (Adventus Messiae) on the Messiah and a study on biblical chronology.
