2. Name of five biblical figures: the firstborn son of Chedon (Jdg. 8:20; Heb. Jether); two descendants of the patriarch Judah (Heb. Jether), one in the line of Jerahmeel (1 Chr. 2:32) and one in that of Caleb (1 Chr. 4:17); a descendant of the patriarch Asher (1 Chr. 7:37–38; Heb. Jether and Jithran); an Ishmaelite (Heb. Jether and Jithra) who, with Abigail, David’s sister, fathered Amasa (q.v.; 1 Chr. 2:16–17), who played a prominent role in David’s history until slain by Joab (2 Sam. 17:25; 1 Kgs. 2:5, 32).
