JETHER. - 1. Priestly city (Heb. Jattir) of the tribe of Judah (Josh. 15:48; 21:14; 1 Sam. 30:27; 1 Chron. 6:42), corresponding to present-day 'Attir, 19 km south of Hebron.

2. Name of five biblical figures: the firstborn son of Gideon (Judg. 8:20: Heb. Jether); two descendants of the patriarch Judah (Heb. Jether), one in the line of Jerahmeel (1 Chron. 2:32) and one in that of Caleb (1 Chron. 4:17); a descendant of the patriarch Asher (1 Chron. 7:37, 38: Heb. Jether and Jithran); an Ishmaelite (Heb. Jether and Jithra') who by Abigail, sister of David, begot Amasa (v.; 1 Chron. 2:16, 17), who played a significant part in the history of David until he was killed by Joab (2 Sam. 17:25; 1 Kings 2:5, 32).
