IETHER. – 1. A priestly city (Heb. Jattir) of the tribe of Judah (Jos. 15, 48; 21, 14; I Sam. 30, 27; I Par. 6, 42), corresponding to modern-day ʿAttir, 19 km south of Hebron.
2. The name of five biblical figures: Gideon’s firstborn son (Iudc. 8, 20: Heb. Jether); two descendants of the patriarch Judah (Heb. Jether), one in the line of Ierameel (I Par. 2, 32) and the other in that of Caleb (I Par. 4, 17); a descendant of the patriarch Aser (I Par. 7, 37, 38: Heb. Jether and Jithran); and an Ishmaelite (Heb. Jether and Jithraʾ) who, with Abigail, David’s sister, fathered Amasa (v. I Par. 2, 16, 17), who played a significant role in David’s history until he was killed by Ioab (II Sam. 17, 25; I Reg. 2, 5, 32). Angelo Penna
