JERAMEEL (Hebrew Jērahmē'ēl). - 1. First son of Hezron, grandson of Judah (1 Chron. 2:9, 25 ff., 33-42).

The descendants of I. (about whom T. K. Cheyne fantasizes) lived with the Kenites and the Calebites in the Negeb; they are part of the tribe of Judah, although of Edomite origin.

The Negeb of I. lay to the southeast of Beersheba, toward the Wâdi Rahmah, between 'Aslûg and Kurnûb. In the list of Shoshenq I at Karnak one finds Iurahma and Iurhem, which represent the Hebrew I. David gave Achish of Gath to believe that he was raiding the Jerahmeelites (1 Sam. 27:8 ff.), while instead he sent them a share of the booty taken from the enemies of Judah (1 Sam. 30:29).

2. Levite of the stock of Merari (1 Chron. 24:29).

3. Prince of royal stock to whom Jehoiakim entrusted the arrest of Baruch and Jeremiah (Jer. 36:26; Vulg. Ieremiel).
