CHUSAI

CHUSAI (Heb. Ḥúšaj). - Archite (2 Sam. 14:32; 17:5, 14), friend and intimate counselor of David (2 Sam. 15:37; 16:16), whose full trust he enjoyed and whom he served with complete devotion. Having offered to follow David in his flight from Absalom, he was not accepted, given his advanced age; but he was advised to enter the city to place himself at the side of the rebel and to render vain, through his shrewdness, the plans of the traitor Ahithophel (2 Sam. 15:31-37), whose ability David greatly feared. Indeed C. kept David informed of the turn of events in Jerusalem, and induced Absalom, against the advice of Ahithophel, to postpone the pursuit of his father. He thus gave the king the opportunity to take the appropriate measures, saving his life and his kingdom (2 Sam. 17:1-14). Probably C. is to be identified with the father of Baana, one of Solomon's prefects (1 Kings 4:16).
