CHUSAN RASATHAIM

CHUSAN RASATHAIM (Heb. Kūfan Rīš'āthajim). - King, according to the Vulgate, of Mesopotamia and Syria (Judg. 3:8, 10).

The Hebrew text calls him king of 'Āram Nahārajim or "Aram (v.) of the two rivers." There are those who make C. the head of an Arab tribe, reading Edom for Aram (cf. Hab. 3:7). Others have attempted to see in C. Tushratta king of Mitanni, a contemporary of Amenophis II (cf. H. Hänsler, Der historische Hintergrund von Richter 3, 8-10, in Biblica, 11 [1930], pp. 391-418; 12 [1931], pp. 3-26, 271-96, 395-410). C. was the first oppressor of the Hebrews after the death of Joshua; after eight years the Lord raised up Othniel, the first Judge, who defeated him, procuring for Israel free peace for forty years.
