Jurodivyj

Also known as: fool for Christ's sake, fools for Christ, holy fools

JURODIVYJ. — A title given in Russia to ascetics who by their conduct seek the contempt of men and inner freedom in the divine service. Of these "fools for Christ" there have always been some both in the West and in the East, for example, Andrew the Fool (v.). In Russia, however, they enjoyed a special esteem and have appeared down to our own days in all social classes. Very well known among them is a certain Basil (d. 1552), to whose memory the characteristic church on Red Square in Moscow, formerly the cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, is dedicated. This kind of piety is obviously exposed to the danger of degeneration.
