LEMKIVČYSNA, APOSTOLIC ADMINISTRATION OF. - This is a region in the northern Carpathians, inhabited by the eastern stock of the Lemkos. From the earliest times it belonged to the triple bishopric of Przemysl, Sambor and Sanok, with the episcopal residence at Sanok. Since the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596) the region wavered between Catholicism and schism. Only in 1691 did the union take place. After the First World War L. was separated from Przemysl and made an apostolic administration the better to oppose the propaganda of the Russophile schismatics. After the Second World War the population of L. was deported to the Soviet Union. The apostolic administrator took refuge abroad.
