LEMKIVČYSNA, APOSTOLIC ADMINISTRATION of. — This is a region in the northern Carpathians, inhabited by the eastern branch of the Lemki. From the earliest times it belonged to the tripartite bishopric of Przemysl, Sambor, and Sanok, with the episcopal residence at Sanok. From the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), the region oscillated between Catholicism and schism. Only in 1691 did the union take place. After the First World War, L. was separated from Przemysl and made an apostolic administration in order to oppose more effectively the propaganda of the Russophile schismatics. After the Second World War, the population of L. was deported to the Soviet Union. The apostolic administrator took refuge abroad.
