LEMKIVČYSNA, APOSTOLIC ADMINISTRATION OF. — This is a region in the northern Carpathians inhabited by the eastern branch of the Lemki people. From earliest times it belonged to the triple bishopric of Przemyśl, Sambor, and Sanok, with the episcopal see at Sanok. Since the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), the region wavered between Catholicism and schism. Only in 1691 did the union take place. After the First World War, L. was separated from Przemyśl and made an apostolic administration to better counter the propaganda of the Russophile schismatics. After the Second World War, the population of L. was deported to the Soviet Union. The apostolic administrator took refuge abroad.
