LEMIRE, JULES. - French sociologist, b. at Vieux-Berquin on 23 Apr. 1853, d. at Hazebrouck on 7 Mar. 1928. Ordained priest in 1878, he taught in the Seminary of Hazebrouck.
He worked and wrote extensively for the realization of Christian social ideals: he saw that only by intense activity in the social field could the Church prevent the complete secularization of the people. Much to form this conviction in him was due to Cardinal Manning, whom he knew personally and on whom he published a book: *Le card. Manning et son oeuvre sociale* (Paris 1893). He was mayor of Hazebrouck from 1914.
