LEMIRE, JULES. - French sociologist, b. at Vieux Berquin on 23 April 1853, d. at Hazebrouck on 7 March 1928. Having become a priest in 1878, he taught at the Seminary of Hazebrouck.
He worked and wrote a great deal for the realization of Christian social ideals: he saw that only by working intensely in the social field could the Church prevent the complete de-Christianization of the people. Cardinal Manning, whom he knew personally and on whom he published a book, Le card. Manning et son oeuvre sociale (Paris 1893), contributed greatly to forming this conviction in him. He was mayor of Hazebrouck from 1914.
