MALVEZZI, VINCENZO. — Cardinal, born in Bologna on 22 Feb. 1715, died at Cento on 3 Dec. 1775. Created by Benedict XIV Archbishop of Bologna and cardinal, an enemy of the Jesuits and pleasing to the sovereigns, who hoped for his election as pope, he attempted, by order of Clement XIV, to expel the Jesuits from his diocese: he met with resistance even from the Senate and the Bolognese people and had to resort to force. He requested and approved the suppression of the Society.
