MALVEZZI, VINCENZO. – Cardinal, born in Bologna on 22 February 1715, died at Cento on 3 December 1775. Created by Benedict XIV Archbishop of Bologna and cardinal, an enemy of the Jesuits and esteemed by sovereigns, who hoped for his election as pope, he attempted, at the behest of Clement XIV, to eliminate the Jesuits from his diocese: he encountered resistance even in the Senate and among the people of Bologna and was forced to use military force. He requested and approved the suppression of the Society.
