MALVITO. - An ancient diocese and a very ancient city of northern Calabria, elevated to episcopal see during the domination of the Lombard dukes. The oldest document that recalls it is the bull of John XV of 12 July 989, which places it among the suffragans of Salerno. As such it is also recalled by John XV himself in 994; by Benedict VIII, in the bull of 25 Apr. 1016 and of 27 Dec. 1019; by Stephen IX, in the bull of 24 March 1058; by Paschal II, in the bull of 1102 to the archbishop of Salerno, etc. However, in the Liber censuum it appears immediately subject to the Holy See.
That M. took the succession of Tempsa, of Cirella or of Blanda Iulia, ancient dioceses of the Tyrrhenian coast, there are no arguments to deny; but certainly it was not replaced by S. Marco, as Fabre would have it, because this diocese was founded by Robert Guiscard around 1070, while M. exists until the middle of the 14th century, as appears from the Liber censuum and from local history, which attributes its suppression to the killing of its bishop Abbondanzio, in 1350. But it is true that, with the suppression, its territory was incorporated into that of the very nearby S. Marco.
