Tarditi, Ildefonso

TARDITI, ILDEFONSO. - Piarist, b. at Mondovì on 14 Dec. 1704, d. at Rome on 30 Dec. 1790.

Devoted for many years to teaching, he had illustrious pupils, such as Cardinals Malvezzi, Livizzano and Antonelli. Pope Benedict XIV, to whom he was very dear, chose him out of all the men of letters of Rome for the Latin translation of his Istituzioni ecclesiastiche and wished that T.'s name should appear beside his own on the title page. The same Pope appointed T. rector of the College of Propaganda Fide, an office he held with general acclaim for fully 35 years. The biography he wrote of his fellow citizen Cardinal Bona was prefixed to the volume of Epistolae selectae (Turin 1754).
