TARDITI, ILDEFONSO. – Piarist, born in Mondovi on 14 December 1704, died in Rome on 30 December 1790.
Devoted for many years to teaching, he had illustrious pupils, among them Cardinals Malvezzi, Livizzano, and Antonelli. Pope Benedict XIV, to whom he was especially dear, selected him from among all the scholars of Rome to prepare the Latin translation of his Istituzioni ecclesiastiche and wished T.’s name to appear beside his own on the title page. The same Pope appointed T. rector of the College of Propaganda Fide, an office which he held, to general acclaim, for no fewer than 35 years. The biography he wrote of his fellow citizen, Cardinal Bona, was prefixed to the volume Epistolae selectae (Turin 1754).
