RICCI, MAURO. - Writer, b. in Florence on 14 June 1826; a Piarist on 17 Sept. 1843, d. in Rome on 27 Jan. 1900.

He was in contact with the leading men of letters of his time; Leo XIII wanted him as professor of Italian literature at the Scuola superiore founded by him in Rome. He was general of the Piarists from 1886 until his death. Of his vast output, the following are remembered: Vita della s. Madre Teresa di Gesù, Florence 1874; Vita di cari defunti, ibid. 1875; L'Iliade travestita alla fiorentina, 23 vols., Florence 1884-97; Dante Alighieri cattolico apostolico romano, ibid. 1885; I riposi di Compiobbi, ibid. 1894; Prose sacre, morali e filosofiche, ibid. 1895; L'allegra filologia, ibid. 1898.
