PULITI, ALESSANDRO. - Piarist, b. in Florence on 10 July 1679, d. there on 25 July 1752. Cultured in in Latin and Greek, he taught philosophy and theology for a long time in Florence and in Genoa.

His works reveal him to be a great scholar, although, in the judgment of some, he errs on the side of excessive length and minuteness. One of the works that brought him the most fame, as a distinguished Greek scholar, was the Commentaria in Homeri Iliadem, of Eustathius (three thick folio volumes, Florence 1730, 1732, 1735; vol. IV still unpublished). In 1733 he was appointed professor of Greek language at the University of Pisa, later passing, upon the death of B. Averani, to the chair of eloquence and belles-lettres. His Latin orations in print, delivered "pro instauratione studiorum", are most remarkable. He was very dear to Pope Benedict XIV, from whom he received encouragement for the publication of his commentaries on the Roman Martyrology, a vast and erudite work, of which, unfortunately, only the first volume appeared (Martyrol. Romanum commentariis illustratum, Florence, in-fol.). Some of his works were collected after his death and published in 1774.
