KASPER, KATHARINA. - In religion Maria, born at Dernbach (diocese of Limburg in Hesse) on 26 May 1820, died there on 2 February 1898. She spent her adolescence in study and in the exercise of works of charity under her mother's guidance. To assist the poor and the needy she founded in 1848 the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. She suffered persecution during the Kulturkampf, but in compensation she was able to see her institute cross the borders of Germany and spread into other regions. The cause for her beatification has been introduced.
