KASPER, KATHARINA. – In religion Maria, born at Dernbach (diocese of Limburg in Hesse) on 26 May 1820, died there on 2 February 1898. She spent her adolescence studying and practicing works of charity under her mother’s guidance. To assist the poor and needy, in 1848 she founded the Institute of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. She suffered the persecution of the Kulturkampf, but in compensation was able to see her institute cross the borders of Germany and expand into other regions. The cause of beatification has been introduced.
