KERLE, JACOB de. - Musician, b. at Ypres ca. 1530, d. at Prague on 7 Jan. 1591. In 1555 he was organist at Orvieto, whence he moved as maestro di cappella, in the retinue of Cardinal Otto of Truchses, to Augsburg, Rome and Dillingen. He is found again in Rome, then at Ypres. In 1557 he was a canon of the cathedral of Cambrai; in 1582 maestro di cappella at the court of Rudolf II in Prague.

A most renowned composer, he wrote Juni (Rome 1558), Salmi da Vespro (Venice 1561), Magnificat (ibid. 1561), 6 Masses for 4 and 5 voices (ibid. 1562), Madrigals (ibid. 1570) and other music of prized contrapuntal and polyphonic workmanship.
