Ger. — Musician, b. at Ypres c. 1530, d. at Prague 7 Jan. 1591. In 1555 he was organist at Orvieto, whence he passed as maestro di cappella, following Cardinal Otto of Truchsees, to Augsburg, Rome, and Dillingen. He is found again at Rome, then at Ypres. In 1557 he was canon of the cathedral at Cambrai; in 1582 maestro di cappella at the court of Rudolph II at Prague.
A most renowned composer, he wrote Hymns (Rome 1558), Vespers Psalms (Venice 1561), Magnificats (ibid. 1561), 6 Masses for 4 and 5 voices (ibid. 1562), Madrigals (ibid. 1570), and other music of excellent contrapuntal and polyphonic workmanship.
