KEPLER, PAUL WILHELM. - Bishop, b. Sept. 28, 1852 at Schwäbisch-Gmünd, d. July 16, 1926 at Rottenburg. Ordainedpriest in 1875, he then carried out pastoral activity in the parish of Cannstatt. Professor of New Testament exegesis at Tübingen in 1883, he taught there until 1894, after having moved in 1889 to the chair of moral and pastoral theology. Professor of moral theology at Freiburg im Breisgau in 1894, he became in 1898 bishop of Rottenburg, where he remained until his death. An effective preacher, he considered the importance of Sacred Scripture as the primary source of homiletics to be fundamental.
As head of the diocese of Rottenburg he took greatly to heart the fate of all those who had been harmed by the First World War and by inflation, and he displayed great pastoral activity, providing for the founding of new convents. He took an active part in the anti-modernist struggle; he promoted studies on Christian art, directed the Archiv für christliche Kunst from 1885 to 1894, and himself published in 1888 the monograph Württembergs kirchliche

Kunstaltertümer. Among his works the following are chiefly remembered: Das Johannes-Evangelium u. das Ende des I. christl. Jahrhundert (Freiburg im Breisgau 1883); Aus Kunst u. Leben (ibid. 1905, 8th ed. 1923); Mehr Freude (ibid. 1909, 183rd thousand, ibid. 1929, translated into 13 languages, Italian version, Rome 1911) and many volumes of sermons and homilies.
