KARNKOWSKI, STANISŁAW. - Primate of Poland, b. 10 May 1520, d. 18 June 1603. Bishop of Włocławek (Leslau) in 1567, he became in 1581 Archbishop of Gniezno and gave impetus to the Catholic restoration in Poland. He founded seminaries at Włocławek, Kalisz and Gniezno, which he entrusted to the Jesuits. At his request and with the approval of Gregory XIII, J. Wujek translated the Bible into Polish. He supported the election of rulers well disposed toward the Catholic Church (Henry of Valois, Stephen Báthory and Sigismund III Vasa) and was, as primate, in 1586 at the head of the regency.
