SIGISMUND III VASA, King of Poland and of Sweden. - Son of John III, King of Sweden, and of Catherine Jagiellon, b. 20 June 1566 at Gripsholm (Sweden), d. 30 Apr. 1632 at Warsaw.
He was elected King of Poland in August. On his father's death, in 1592, he succeeded in having himself crowned King of Sweden as well, giving a guarantee that he would respect the resolutions of the Synod of Uppsala of 1593, which introduced into Sweden the articles of the Augsburg Confession. S., who was instead a determined and convinced supporter of the Catholic Reform in the Nordic countries, soon found himself in conflict with his subjects beyond the Baltic. After having tried in vain to conquer Sweden in 1598 with an army, he was declared the following year to have forfeited the throne. All of S.'s subsequent foreign policy was directed toward recovering the Swedish crown, but every effort of his was in vain. Especially after the accession to the throne of Gustavus Adolphus, S. not only lost every hope of returning to his father's throne, but Poland itself, involved in this dynastic struggle, suffered the consequences: the Peace of Altmark (1629), with the acquisition of Livonia, in fact guaranteed Sweden predominance over the Baltic. Throughout his reign S. was a sincere, active and determined supporter of the Catholic faith. The loss of the Swedish crown on the one hand, and the political opposition of the Protestants in Poland itself on the other, strengthened him in his decision to patronize the Counter-Reformation in every way and to grant every support to the Jesuits.
