JORDAN, FRANZ. - Priest, in religion F. Maria della Croce, b. at Gurtweil (Baden) on 16 June 1848, d. at Tafers (Switzerland) on 8 Sept. 1918. Ordained a priest (1878), he was soon sent to Rome to the Teutonic Hospice in the Vatican to perfect himself in the study of Oriental languages. In 1880 he made a journey to the East, during which he matured the idea of an association for the diffusion of Catholic truth and morality. Having returned to Rome the following year, he founded the Apostolic Society of Teachers, which later became the Society of the Divine Savior. His meeting with the Baroness of Wüllenweber decided the foundation of the Daughters of the Divine Savior, to support the work of his religious in the missions. Tireless in his work for the expansion of the two Congregations in the Indies, in the German-speaking countries and in the Americas, he suffered misunderstandings and suspicions, but firmness of character and a spirit of discipline imposed him on everyone's administration. His cause for beatification is in progress.
