KRAUS, JOHANN. - Bohemian Jesuit, missionary and architect in America, b. at Pilsen on 19 June 1664, d. at Buenos Aires in 1714. Received in the year 1689 into the Society of Jesus as a coadjutor brother, he passed in 1698 to the province of Paraguay.
There he practiced his art in the reductions of Yapeyú, S. Tomé, S. Miguel and principally S. Juan, where he helped Fr. A. Sepp in the founding of the village and built a large church. More important were his works outside the reductions, at Córdoba in Tucumán (the house of the novitiate and the college known as that of Monserrat, later continued by others on his designs) and at Buenos Aires. Having to rebuild (except for the façade) the great church of S. Ignazio in Buenos Aires, he followed closely the plan of the Gesù in Rome. Historians of Argentine art regard him as one of the most distinguished masters of colonial architecture in their country.
