DUMOUCHEL, Etienne. - Astronomer, born at Monfort-l'Amaury (Seine-et-Oise, France) on 10 July 1773, served as a soldier in Napoleon's army before entering the seminary of St Sulpice and later the Society of the Fathers of the Faith. When the Society of Jesus was restored in 1814, he, like many of his companions, joined II. After teaching mathematics and astronomy in several colleges in France, he was called in 1824 to the Roman College, where he held the chair of astronomy and directed the observatory. He trained many able disciples there, including his successor Fr. Francesco De Vico. He died in these duties on 15 January 1840.
