DUMOUCHEL, ETIENNE

DUMOUCHEL, ETIENNE. - Astronomer, b. at Monfort-l'Amaury (Seine-et-Oise, France) on July 10, 1773, he was a soldier in Napoleon's army before entering the seminary of St. Sulpice and then the Society of the Fathers of the Faith; when the Society of Jesus was re-established in 1814, he had himself received into it, as did many of his companions. After teaching mathematics and astronomy in several colleges in France, he was called in 1824 to the Roman College, to hold there the chair of astronomy and direct the observatory. There he trained able disciples, among them his successor Fr. Francesco De Vico. M. in these duties on Jan. 15, 1840.
