DIDIOT, JULES. – Priest and theologian, born at Cheppy (Meuse) on 14 August 1840, died at Montbras (near Maxeys-sur-Vaysse [Meuse]) on 20 December 1903. Having graduated in theology from the Collegio Romano (1864), he taught philosophy and then dogmatic theology at the seminary of Verdun (1864–70), and was librarian of the same city (1871–77). After the Catholic faculties of the north were founded at Lille, he was called to teach in its theological faculty, of which he was dean (1877–86; 1893–96), and sociology. From 1885 to 1892 he directed the Revue des sciences ecclésiastiques. To considerable influence as a professor, D. added a substantial literary output, consisting especially of articles in various journals.
Among his major works are: L'état religieux (Verdun 1871); Le docteur angélique st Thomas d'Aquin (Lille 1874); Logique surnaturelle subjective (1892); Morale surnaturelle fondamentale (1896); Morale surnaturelle spéciale: les vertus théologales (1897); La vertu de religion (1899); Contribution philosophique à l'étude des sciences (Lille 1902). He left a Traité de la justice in manuscript.
