DELAPORTE, Victor. French Jesuit and man of letters, b. at St-Wandrille (Orne) 6 Nov. 1846, d. at Rennes 25 Apr. 1910. A Jesuit in 1866 and a priest in 1882, he was assigned in 1887 to the editorial staff of the periodical *Les études*, to which he contributed no fewer than 113 articles until 1906.
Outside the review, his abundant output includes volumes of vigorously Catholic literary criticism: *L'art poétique de Boileau, commenté par Boileau et par ses contemporains* (Paris 1888); *Classiques païens et chrétiens* (ibid. 1894); *De la ruine française* (Brussels 1898); *Etudes et causeries littéraires* (4 vols., Lille 1899); *Mélanges de littérature et d'histoire* (2 vols., Brussels 1907). Yet he owed his fame chiefly to his verse, executed with imperceptible craftsmanship: college plays, occasional poems, and in particular three volumes of *Récits et légendes* (ibid. 1887, 1890, and 1900), whose numerous editions attest to a rare success in that genre. He also published several religious biographies or monographs, such as: *Un patron chrétien* (Paris 1895); *Le monastère des oiseaux* (ibid. 1899); *Le P. Le Tallec* (ibid. 1904).
