DELATTE, PAUL. — Benedictine, born at Jeumont (Cambrai) in 1848, died on the island of Wight in 1937. In 1890 he was elected third abbot of the monastery of Solesmes, where he had made his profession in 1885. Pius X, by the brief Ex quo tempore of 22 May 1904, entrusted to him and his monks the codification of the Roman edition of the Gregorian chant books.
In addition to numerous articles in various journals, he wrote: Vie de Dom Guéranger (2 vols., Paris 1912); Commentaire sur la règle de st Benoit (there, 1913); Commentaire sur l'Évangile (2 vols., Tours 1922; Italian trans., Rome 1932); Commentaire sur les Épîtres de st Paul (3 vols., Essechen 1924; Italian trans., 2 vols., Turin 1935–36), always demonstrating not only wide-ranging erudition, but also a profound understanding of religious psychology and asceticism.
