Dum, Nocte Pulsa, Lucifer

DUM, NOCTE PULSA, LUCIFER. - Hymn of Lauds in the Office of St. Venantius martyr, written by Cardinal Bona and inserted into the breviary by Clement X.

As the dawn is the herald of the approaching day, so the martyrdom of the young man of Camerino brought the light of the spirit to his fellow citizens. His blood washed away their sins and was the seed of new Christians.

The hymn is one of the two others of the same feast, and they are certainly by the same author, yet it stands apart from them for its loftier inspiration and robustness of form.
