Nocte Surgentes Vigilemus Omnes

NOCTE SURGENTES VIGILEMUS OMNES. - Hymn of Matins, used from the third Sunday after Pentecost to Sept. 27, by an unknown author.

In the silence of the night, when all is still, the faithful one is bidden to praise the Lord in the meditation of the psalms and in the singing of hymns: a gentle alternation that keeps him awake when his limbs, weary from the day's work, long for rest. This renunciation or limitation of rest in order to devote oneself to prayer will merit entry into eternal light.
