Nox et tenebrae et nubila

NOX ET TENEBRAE ET NUBILA. - Hymn of Lauds in the Office of Wednesday.

Taken from the second, longer hymn of the liber Cathemerinon, not by Prudentius, it is a whole explosion of joy, because, just as at the light of the advancing day the darkness of night and its shadows vanish, so before Christ the darkness of the spirit vanishes; and just as in the light of the sun the whole creation is revealed in its enchantment, so, enlightened by the « Sun that enlightens all men who come into this world » (Io. 1, 9), man can look into the depths of his own being and purify it, dispelling all darkness and all shadows.
