«NULLIS TE GENITOR BLANDITIIS TRAHIT». — Hymn of praise for the feast of St. Ermenegildo, composed by Urban VIII when in 1636 he extended the feast of this Spanish martyr to the Universal Church.
It extols the courage and heroism of the Saint who yields neither to his father’s enticements nor falters before the executioner, but prefers the joys of heaven to the pleasures of the world. The poet drew the details of his life from chapter 31 of Book III of the Dialogues of St. Gregory the Great. The hymn is distinguished by consummate artistry and exquisite taste in Latin diction, and is filled with admiration for the heroic deeds of the young prince.
