Viktor Dmitrievich Kudryavtsev-Platonov
KUDRAVTSEV-PLATONOV, VIKTOR DIMITRIEVIČ. - Born 3 Oct. 1828, died 3 Dec. 1891, Russian philosopher. A professor at the Ecclesiastical Academy of Moscow, he had as a disciple Solov'ev and Prince (later Tsar) Nicholas II. K., in the philosophical tradition of the Academy, was the intermediate link between F. A. Golubinskij (who taught from 1818 to 1854) and A. I. Vvedenskij (who taught there from about 1888 to 1912). In his numerous works he created a systematic whole of idealism, connected above all with Jakobi (1743-1819) and with idealistic theism of various types, from Baader to Lotze. He sought to make a synthesis of reason and faith, and to justify faith.
His Works, in 3 vols., were published by the Brotherhood of St. Sergius (Sergiev Posad 1892-94): vol. I (1893-94) contains the introduction of 182 pp. on the life, philosophy and importance of K.; then K.'s investigations on the introduction to philosophy and on gnoseology; vol. II (1892-93), on natural theology, has among other things an important work: Religion, Its Essence and Origin; vol. III (1894), concerns cosmology and rational psychology.
