LAMBERTO of HERSFELD. - Benedictine monk and historian. At about the age of twenty-five he entered the monastery of Hersfeld and probably directed its school. In 1070 he went to the abbeys of Salfeld and Siegburg to study the institutions and rites of the new monks who had come from Fruttuaria with Archbishop Annone.
Moved by love for his monastery, which he defended against many adversaries, he wrote between 1063 and 1073 the life of its founder Lullo, Archbishop of Magonza, and a versified history, now lost.
While Abbot Hartvico and his monks supported Emperor Enrico IV, L., after the election of Rodolfo di Svevia, wrote his Annales, intending to demonstrate the just deposition of Enrico and the legitimate election of Rodolfo. Because of this bias the Annales lose value, but they are nevertheless still a valuable source, especially for the first years of the pontificate of Gregorio VII; indeed, they extend to 1077.
