LETTURE CATTOLICHE. – A popular periodical publication, begun by St. Giovanni Bosco in Turin in 1853, at first in bimonthly issues, which later became monthly.
The founder’s aim was to nourish and defend the faith among the people, increasingly threatened by the propaganda of errors that had begun to be unleashed in Upper Italy after the promulgation of the Albertine Edict on freedom of the press (1847). Written in a simple style, they contained exclusively religious subjects and often matters of current interest. When Fr. Bosco died (1888), the L. C. did not die with him; although passing through various crises, they have survived him to the present day.
