CATHOLIC READINGS. - A popular periodical publication, begun by St. John Bosco in Turin in 1853, at first in bimonthly installments, which later became monthly.

The founder's purpose was to nourish and defend the faith among the people, which was increasingly threatened by the propaganda of errors that had begun to unleash itself in Upper Italy after the promulgation of the Albertine Edict on freedom of the press (1847). Written in a simple style, they contained exclusively religious matters and often matters of current events. After the death of Don Bosco (1888), the Catholic Readings did not die; although they passed through various crises, they survived him down to the present.
