LETTURE. – A monthly review of book criticism, entrusted to the Jesuits by the Archbishop of Milan in 1945 and begun in 1946.
It provides timely notices of works of fiction, literature, art, theatre, history, science, philosophy, pedagogy, and religion, with particular attention to books intended for wider dissemination; while summarizing their content, it devotes special and vigilant effort to expressing a guiding moral judgment, in order to recommend or caution against their reading. It also aims to encourage a narrative art that is literary in style and formative in content, capable of competing with the works of writers of differing orientations.
