LINDE, JUSTIN TIMOTHEUS BALTHASAR. - German jurist and statesman, b. 7 Aug. 1797 at Brilon (Westphalia), d. 9 June 1870 at Bonn. Extraordinary professor of law at Giessen in 1823, he was called in 1829 to Darmstadt as ministerial councillor. Chancellor of the University of Giessen in 1833, he contributed to the establishment of the Catholic Faculty of Theology at that institution of higher learning.
A privy councillor of state in 1836, as a convinced Catholic he carried out prudent work of mediation for good harmony between Church and State. He resigned his office in 1847 because he did not share the policy of the government of Hesse, favourable to Ronge and to the German-Catholic movement.
A deputy to the Parliaments of Frankfurt and Erfurt in 1848-49, he subsequently represented the principalities of Liechtenstein, Reuss, and Hesse-Homburg in the German Federal Diet. His works on civil procedural law are renowned: Abhandlungen aus dem deutschen gemeinen Civilprozess (2 vols., Bonn 1823-29); Lehrbuch des deutschen gemeinen Civilprozesses (7th ed., ibid. 1850); Über die Lehre von den Rechtsmitteln (2 vols., Giessen 1831-40).
