LINDANO (Latinized from Van der Linden or Lind), Wilhelm. - Controversialist, b. at Dordrecht in 1525, d. at Ghent on 2 Nov. 1588. In 1554 he became a professor at the recently founded University of Dillingen, where he remained until 1557, when Philip II and the bishop of Utrecht appointed him vicar general for Frisia and inquisitor.
In 1563 he was consecrated bishop of the new diocese of Roermond, but owing to various difficulties he was able to take possession of it only in 1569. Zealous for the implementation of the Tridentine reform, he encountered such difficulties that in 1578 he was forced to go into exile in Spain and in Rome, where he formed a friendship with Card. Baronio. In 1588 he was transferred to the see of Ghent, vacant since 1575 owing to the death of Cornelius Jansenius, but he died shortly after his installation.
L. is one of the greatest controversialists of the 16th century. His works (more than 60) touch on many fields: of the works on Sacred Scripture (on the Tridentine decree concerning the Vulgate, on the correction of the Vulgate, on various hermeneutical questions, commentaries and paraphrases of various scriptural texts) special mention is made of: Panoplia evangelica libri V (Cologne 1560), L.'s principal work; furthermore: Apologeticum ad Germanos (Antwerp 1568), reworked in relation to Calvinist doctrines and republished there in 1570-78; Stromata pro defensione Concilii Tridentini (Cologne 1575); Concordia discors (ibid. 1583).
