JUNGMANN, BERNARD. - Theologian, b. in Münster on 1 March 1833, d. in Louvain on 12 Jan. 1895. From 1861 he taught philosophy at the Seminary of Roulers (diocese of Bruges), becoming in 1861 a lecturer in dogmatics at the Seminary of Bruges, and in 1871 professor of church history at the University of Louvain. Here his particular merit was the creation of a separate chair for patrology, which he himself taught from 1879 to 1890, and the founding of the Seminary of Church History, which he directed with great competence.
He wrote: Tractatus de Gratia (Brussels 1868); De Deo uno et trino (Regensburg 1870); De Deo creatore (ibid. 1871); De novissimis (ibid. 1871); De vera religione (ibid. 1874); Dissertationes selectae in historiam ecclesiasticam (7 vols., ibid. 1880-87) and various articles in the Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie and in the Katholik.
