JUNGMANN, BERNARD. - Theologian, b. at Münster on 1 March 1833, d. at Louvain on 12 Jan. 1895. From 1861 he taught philosophy at the Seminary of Roulers (diocese of Bruges), becoming in 1861 lecturer in dogmatics at the Seminary of Bruges, and in 1871 professor of ecclesiastical history at the University of Louvain. Here his particular merit was the establishment of a separate chair of patrology, which he himself taught from 1879 to 1890, and the foundation of the Seminary of ecclesiastical history, which he directed with great competence.
He wrote: Tractatus de Gratia (Brussels 1868); De Deo uno et trino (Regensburg 1870); De Deo creatore (ibid. 1871); De novissimis (ibid. 1871); De vera religione (ibid. 1874); Dissertationes selectae in historiam ecclesiasticam (7 vols., ibid. 1880–87), and various articles in the Zeitschrift für katholische Theologie and the Katholik.
