MALCZEWSKI, Jacek (Malezewski, Giacinto). - Polish painter, b. at Radom in 1854, d. at Kraków in 1929. He studied at Kraków, in Paris and finally in Munich, where he was attracted by the art of Arnold Böcklin. In 1886 he returned to Kraków and remained there until his death.
Characteristic of his first period are representations of scenes inspired by the exile of the Polish insurgents of 1863, deported to Siberia, painted with acute realism. M. had an exceptional sensitivity for colour and a luxuriant lyrical imagination. In the second period of his activity he elaborated a limpid style of his own, depicting symbolic images of a fantastic neo-Romanticism, in which he sometimes frames a sacred subject. He also painted a number of portraits, usually interweaving in them figurations of an allegorical character. His principal works are to be found in the National Museum of Kraków, and before the war of 1939 they were scattered among collections in Poland.
