MANIZALES, DIOCESE of. — Diocese and capital city of the department of Caldas in Colombia. It has an area of 10,432 sq km and a population of 950,000, of whom 949,000 are Catholics. It has

64 parishes served by 167 diocesan priests and 60 religious priests; it has a seminary, 18 male and 84 female religious communities (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 263).

The city of M. is situated at 2,130 m on the Central Cordillera; it was founded by the Antioqueños and suffered serious damage in the earthquake of 1925. It is an agricultural and mining center. The diocese was created by Pope Leo XIII on 11 April 1900; it is a suffragan of Medellin.
